I’ve worked in the wonderful world of factual television for over 20 years. It's an industry I love. It’s fast moving, fun, collaborative and, overall, pretty interesting. Every job is different. But, with every different job, comes different systems (note the plural)...and that can be the boring bit.
Whether it's Teams, Trello, Google docs or good old fashioned files and folders on a shared drive...you can end up using multiple systems on a single production in the same company, at the same time. It’s time consuming and inefficient for all parties concerned. It crushes creativity rather than unleashing it.
In an industry that is so forward thinking in so many ways, whether it's using the latest cameras or state of the art editing systems, why are we still held prisoner to laborious work flow systems that seem so archaic?
When I came across Lumi I could visualise how almost every single production I’ve worked on could have benefitted from this software. It enables everyone to work on the same document, in the same space, at the same time, on the same platform, no matter where in the world you are. It's all those different systems rolled into one and much, much more. It creates clear visibility of the entire production process. But, by far the best thing about it? Its simplicity.
I’m not tech-savvy and never pretend to be. But the first time I saw Lumi, I got it. I understood the concept straight away. It's simple but incredibly powerful. The more data you put in, the more powerful it becomes and the more it can do for you.
As a Series Producer, Exec Producer or CEO you need clear visibility across your programmes and your company. Whether it's how many new series have been commissioned (or parked), what access has (or hasn't) been granted or where you're at with casting…Lumi can tell you in just a couple of clicks. It’s all there, right in front of you. Sitting pretty. Gone are the days of clicking through multiple folders, eventually finding the right file, only to be told that the document you've spent the last hour working on wasn't the latest version and has been updated by someone else...let's be honest, we've all been there. Lumi removes those layers.
As a production manager, if you want to know how many shoot days you've spent on each project it can tell you. If you want to know how many of those days involved talent or location fees or crew...you can pull out that information just by carrying out a refined search. It's live, it's accurate and you can see where they money's being spent. The amount of information Lumi can pull out for you is really quite formidable.
The beauty of Lumi is that it links all the data. Here's a very basic example - if a contributor moves house and a researcher amends their address in one document, the software automatically updates the address everywhere else. So filming locations, contracts, HR, schedules and even publicity...all the linked documents update automatically without everyone else in all the other departments having to do it individually - no emails to send, mistakes to be made.
These examples give you a taste of what Lumi can do. The more information you put in, the more sophisticated it can be.
One of the most exciting and ground-breaking aspects of Lumi is that it brings together editorial and production in one space. In my experience there's always been a certain degree of separation between the two, a bit of ‘them and us’ attitude. Production has their excel spreadsheets, costings and contracts, Editorial has their scripts, ideas and creativity. Lumi brings production, editorial and post all together, under one roof. You can be working anywhere in the world and still be across what's going on. Production can see what Editorial is doing and vice versa. But don't worry, you don't have to 'share' everything...there are secret vaults!
Ultimately, it means there are less folders, less emails, less duplication and less printing. There's more creativity, more collaboration, more visibility. Work becomes easier, faster and cheaper. Lumi streamlines processes and breeds creativity.
On the surface, Lumi is simple. The complexities lie hidden beneath, out of sight. Sounds like my kind of technology. Discover how Lumi can help you change the way you work and bring your team together.
